Font research - finding the perfect one.

Font for a a film is important as when the film becomes more recognisable, the font would therefore provide identity to the film. For example, white block writing, is stereotypically associated with the film 'Scream'. This means that it is vital for us to find a typeface which is ideal for our horror trailer, and therefore be placed on magazines and poster, which we are also manufacturing. From browsing various internet websites and images, we final found the ideal one which we like to pursue into using for our titles. These are other ones were other fonts which we also found, which would give you an insight of our thought process into choosing the ideal one.
This is an example of what we could have used, which this font is called 'Norse Regular'. As you can see it is long and narrow font, which it is in capital letters. We automatically decided that the title should be in capitals as it would follow the conventions of a horror genre trailer. However, this font to me suggests a roman like theme, due to the ends of the letters being thicker than the rest of the lettering. The 'R' definitely supports my interpretation as they used to write by only using lines. This therefore would not be ideal for our trailer as we do not want to confuse our target audience on what genre our film is. Also this would probably also disrupt the continuity of the trailer, poster and magazine as they would contrast from each other too much.
This font is called 'PWJazzy Font' of which we found on another website. This can come across in different ways; such as it could be used for a romantic film as its like someone's written this font by hand. On the other hand, if we edited this, by adding slight texture within the lettering, it could come acriss as if someone scribbled it rapidly. This would therefore suggest panic or even someone trying to escape, which would be ideal for our horror trailer. However, this font would be even better if it was bolder so it would stand out from the background of shots as the narrowness of the lettering could blend in with sections of the font, especially as there will be shots within woods.
This third typeface suggests a sci fi genre, due to the right angled corners and boldness of the lettering. This links to sci fi as you can imagine seeing this on a wall of a alien spaceship, which you have probably seen in films. The feature which I like about this font is the scratched away texture which suggests that something has been trying to scratch it away or even that its worn away. However, the first letter is the only small letter of which I dislike as all titles should start with a capital letter, or all the letter in the same case.
Typeface 4 automatically suggests a genre of romance due to the swirly writing as you can through the letter 'E'. This could cause confusion with the audience, therefore disrupting the trailer we spent a long time to produce. Although it would not be effective for our trailer it would better for film genre such as romance or rom-com's. A positive to this font is that the boldness would allow it to stand out from the background therefore easy t read and see.

This typeface is called 'Yu Mincho Demibold', and is a simplistic font. Although simplistic, it is also effective as we could edit it to create an eerie atmosphere. Due to the simplistic feature of this font it, it is ideal to undergo editing, as we could combine the texture element from typeface 3.
This is the final typeface which we kept coming across when searching for horror fonts. As you can see this is a very stereotypically font for halloween, due to the dripping effect which connotes to blood and gore. This is not effective as it would make our film trailer, magazine and poster come across tacky and immature, due to this dripping effect. This therefore would not be ideal for our products as we want to them to be professional and suitable for our target audience, 15- 24 year olds.
From this research, I believe the simplistic type face 4 is ideal for our production as we can easily edit the font into something more eerie, but still simplistic. See blog of producing our font, which will explain how we edit our font into our desirable image.

Film Title brainstorm

'Hunted'
This was an initial name for our production of our theatrical film trailer. This could be used for our trailer as it creates numerous enigma's which would attract our target audience, 15 year old horror thriller fans. It automatically creates the question of who is getting hunted and what by, which creates a eerie haunting atmosphere due to the uncertainty's and unknowing of this enigma. The title also follows the conventions of a horror genre film as you can tell gore and death will be involved. However, if we do use this title, it may cause confusion within our audience. This is because it could be associated with action genre, for example someone getting their revenge. This is the primary disadvantage if we use this title for our trailer.

'The Campsite'
This is another name which was mentioned in our brainstorm 'The Campsite'. Here, you can see that we were going for a simplistic and obvious name, as the primary location of the trailer would be in a campsite. The word 'the' makes the title seem bold and important in which makes the title haunting. In my opinion, this title is fairly boring and self- explanatory, which could lower the quality of our film trailer as the title doesn't provide any suspense or enigmas.

'Campsite 31/ Pitch 13'
As you can see we came up with two similar titles for our trailer, which both involve numbers. 'Campsite 31', suggests the location of the film, in a wood or forest in the area of 31. This therefore tells the audience what you could expect from the horror film. Having both these titles involving numbers, it creates an enigma of why are these areas so important, what actually happens there? It could even create a further enigma as it could be where the murders occur or where they are based... The down fall to these names is that they suggest a sci fi genre which would cause confusion, which we strongly do not want to do.

'Betrayal'
This automatically creates tension and suspense due to numerous enigmas generated from this title, 'Betrayal'. It creates enigmas such as; who has betrayed who, why, and what is going to happen if you betrayed this person... This therefore ideal for our horror trailer as we are going for a horror with a good storyline. As it creates many enigmas it would mean that people would want to go and watch it, especially if the title is reinforced by the cinematography we film.

'Silent Scream'
This is the final initial idea of what our film trailer could be called, 'Silent Scream'. This acts as an oxymoron due to two contradicting and conflicting ideas being used to describe each other, as you do not expect a scream to be silent. This connotes that there will be be lots of screams within the film, therefore following the conventions of a horror, but these screams may not be heard or unnoticed. This therefore creates an eerie and unsettling atmosphere. The title also uses alliteration which emphasises the 'S' of the title, in which makes the title stay in the audience's mind. In my opinion this is a very effective but simple title which could be ideal for our theatrical trailer.

Masks Analysis

Having the right type of mask is vital to the storyline of the film. Our film is based round a group of young teenagers, therefore we need to be realistic in our choices. Most recently the gas mask has been a very popular and effective choice of mask in films, therefore people may go against the idea as it may become to repetitive or stereo typical. However because our characters are teenagers ,their age group are generally aware of the new and upcoming horror/thriller films and because of this its pretty easy to get hold of a mask online for a reasonable price. Although our film is going to be scary, the antagonists are teenagers so they are not going to be particularly organised or creative so will be easily influenced by films they have seen themselves. This means that the choice of a gas mask is a realistic option for a group of teenagers to choose. The main antagonists will be wearing this mask as it stands out more and its scarier. The dark colour means that the character will be more camouflaged at night and will help create a scary atmosphere. Gas masks are well known for the creepy sound of breathing hence, this will become a big feature in the trailer.
Our second choice of mask is the hockey mask ,again this an easy, assessable and cheap choice therefore it would make a perfect option for a group of teenagers. The colour of it means that it will reflect light, which in someway makes it a silly choice because the antagonist will be more visible and easy to find, however a group of teenagers probably wouldn't think that through. Only having the eyes on show puts an emphasis on them and makes it seem even more scary. The breathing holes are pretty small so the sound of the person breathing will be quite loud and will give a scary effect. The two other antagonists will be wearing this mask.

Film Poster ideas, inspiration and influences.

Our main inspiration for our film poster is this photo that we found online, its very simple however we think it makes a massive impact for our film and for the audience. The black and white filter is very simplistic but also effective, it makes the location seem more secluded and creepy but also sad at the same time. The use of the medium shot allows us to the character in the foreground, while being able to see the location of the film. The character is clearly wearing dark clothing therefore matches well with the grey backdrop. The black and white filter connotes sadness , anger and portrayal also reflecting the mood of the film. The misty gloomy background gives the impression that something could be hiding behind it and emphasises the seclusion in which the forest has, suggesting that there's no way back when you go in. The tall thin trees tower over our antagonist making him look less powerful, dominant and significant, however portraying him like this could symbolise him being able to hide around any corner.

The basic choices of clothes connotes that the character could be a teenager therefore very naïve, also giving the audience a hint to what type of character are film is going to include. The clothes also reflects the normality of the character, suggesting that the antagonist could be anyone. The gas mask is quite a new form of disguise in horror/thriller films but is also suitable because its very accessible. The mask is also very good as it doesn't show any emotion or give a hint as to what gender the person behind it could be therefore creating tension. The tilt to the antagonists head is very subtle but effective it gives the audience the impression that they are confident and arrogant therefore intimidating.

Although we love the way the photo looks at the moment we also want to add our own twist, therefore experimenting. Of course we will take a completely new photo ,but one that is very similar, but add faded layers of similar photos on top of the original photo. We were thinking of adding photos that were the exact same photo but zoomed in , giving the illusion that the antagonist is walking towards the audience but also disappearing too. You will be able to see this through the developing stages of our poster manufacturing.

Slogan
We have decided that we want a short snappy slogan that will consist of a 3-4 word sentence or just 3-4 relatable words. Les miserable's film poster has become an influence of ours. Their slogan is short ,snappy but doesn't take centre stage on the poster. Although Les Miserable is romance musical it still has given us ideas which could come across as creepy on our poster. The use of the full stops after every word makes each of them distinct and powerful. The simplistic texts works well against the dominant picture which would also work well with our choice of photo that's all simplistic. Even though the slogan isn't in the centre of the poster the idea of having it above the film title means that people can get an idea of what the film is about before they know the name. The slogan is also in capital letters making it seem significant.

Title

Due to our inspiration for our background picture, we have decided to have the name of the film at the top of the poster. The picture we have been inspired by has a lot of bare space which could be easily filled by the title. Even though the background is black and white we still want to go with either black or white writing, both stand out well against the light grey background and both have different meanings. With black connoting Death, power and mystery and white being associated with purity and innocence, they both go with the themes of our film. The bold, simple font from this movie poster, The Echo, means that it doesn't take notice away from the poster and means that the title speaks for its self rather than it being obvious to the audience what the film could be about. Having a detailed font can give a lot away about a movie for example if the font looked like dripping blood, then you know people will be killed.
