The Impossible already has a USP without even watching the trailer as it has Naomi Watts starring in it. She has starred in films such as King Kong which was a very well known film which made a lot of money. The establishing shot shows a fairly modern car driving through what looks like a rain-forest. this makes the audience assume it will be based in a foreign country which is a USP as most people like to watch films to escape from everyday life. There is a light piano non - diagetic sound playing in the background which sets a happy mood for the audicne. The following shots show a very luxury hotel pool with the family looking very amazed as from their accent you know they're British.Lots of shots of the family spending time together are shown. For instance them playing on the beach, snorkeling and eating dinner. This makes the audince warm to the family as it can remind them of experiences that they have had with there own family. Writing is shown which says 'In 2004', this appears as the piano music is still playing. Making the audience not think anything of it.

A medium shot of a boys legs running after a ball is shown. As he puts his foot on the ball the music stops. This makes tesion within the audince as they don't know why the mood has suddenly chnaged. Words come up saying ''Tragedy Struck South East Asia' This includes a fact in the trailer which relates to mundane realism as it takes the audince back to reality. All the non - diagetic sound is removed and they have enhanced the diagetic sound. This is to make it easier for the audince to relate to and feel as if they are in that situation. The noises that are enhanced are of the birds, they are shown in a low angle shot flying quite fast all in one direction suggesting to the audince that something is wrong.
Close up shots of the father shouting "Maria" over and over again is shown, this shows the audience the pain and distress that he is going through making them feel distressed as well.
There is a voice over of the father talking to the two youngest boys. Whilst this is being played there are shots of the mother and oldest boy trying to stay in reach. There are birds eye view of the distraught and harm that was made of South East Asia to help the audience understand what actually happened.
Diagetic and non - diagetic sound is played throughout the ending of the trailer as it creates more of an emotion towards the audience by making it seem more powerful. This is becasue you can hear the family talking and helping out others however you also have the effect of the sad music being played making what you watch quite distressful.
At the very end of the trailer a previous shot of the family before the Tsunami hit is shown. This suggests that the family do make it back together in the end and everything becomes happy again. It is a shot of the family letting out Chinese lanterns. these are known to be used to let out any secrets or regrets you have had or even what you wish to happen in the future. This can make the audince think that maybe they are writing what they are grateful for which would be getting back together and managing to move forward with their life.
