The establishing shot for this trailer is a close up of a sunrise. Non-diagetic sound is introduced as the first shot appears. It is the sound of a piano holding down one note. It sounds quite depressing as has quite a low tone to it and lasts about 3 seconds. The words 'America, A nation reborn'
then appears as the sunrise fades to black. This can make the audience wonder why America will be re-born and what it means, this leaves an enigma and makes them want to find out more.
The siluette of a family is shown walking towards the sunset holding hands; this leaves a happy feeling towards the audince and makes them wonder what can go wrong as all they have seen is happy images.
Facts have been included in the trailer such as 'Unemployment is at 1%'. This brings mundane realism into the trailer as it makes the audince start to believe that it is real as facts and figures are being used.Medium shot shows the family (who we assume are the main characters) eating at the dinner table. This is followed by a close up of the parents. This can make the audience think that the parents are in control what what the family decide to do becasue they are the only two close up shots shown, making tghem seem powerful. However, we do get to know slightly about the children in the oncoming shots. For instance we find out that the teenage girl has a boyfriend as a medium shot of them kissing is shown. As this shot is being shown the word 'Crime is at an all time low' pops up. This will not make a lot of sense to the audince at first as they will think the film will include a lot of crime and viloence. However, as they carry on watching they realise what it means.
A panning birds eye view shot is shown of the village that the family we will watch throughout the film lives in. This can help the audience relate to them and put themselves in there shoes. After this fairly peaceful shot of where the family lives, the writing 'becasue one night a year' comes up. The non - diagetic sound comes in of a crackling noise as the words begin to shake.
The next shot looks like old, real life footage of previous years. It shows violence through weapons and through physical harm. The way they have made it look like real footage is by the camera angles that they have filmed, for instance -a high angle shot makes it look like it has been captured by a CCTV camera. They have made sure it is not very clear which makes it seem as if someone has filmed it quickly from there phone.
The distribution company 'Universal' comes up 32 seconds into the trailer. This is followed by an establishing shot of the familys house so that the audince can relate back into the film and link it back into mundane realism.
A close up shot of the dad saying "allows people a release". This makes the audience wonder what release he is talking about. However a sound bridge of some kind of electric chainsaw followed by the actual footage of someone sharpoening a knife.
A long shot of an empty street is shown with Diagetic sound of a radio broadcast telling the people what happens. This gives the audience more of an idea about what will happen and why this particular family are blocking their house up for this particular night.
There is a siron in the background which has been sound bridged throughout the rest of the trailer. This builds the tension up within the audience. As they have the traisition fading to black between each shotwhilst the siron is on creates suspesnse.
The shots begin to speed up half way through the trailer when another character is shown. This makes the tension build up even more as the non-diagetic sound changes to a faster speed aswel making. The diagetic sound and non diagetic sound work together to create tension as the speed of the shots begin to increase. By having a variation of shot types like POV shot makes the audince feel like it is them experiencing the violence within the trailer. This medium shot of the female figure (mother) walking holding a gun for proctection subverts the usual conventions and stereotypes of females in horror films. This is because they are usually seen as being vulnerable and incapable of looking after themself. However; as the audience are shown the antagonist in the background, this conforms to the stereotypes as she is seen to be in trouble. However this also leaves an enigma becasue wedont find out whether she gets hurt or not.The final shot
